Autism is a group of developmental disorders affecting social, communicative and cognitive abilities, and can be a lifelong condition of disability. More severely affected people often need lifelong care, while less severe cases might still require individual support. The various forms of autism form a spectrum, called autism spectrum disorder or pervasive developmental disorder. Specific symptoms can be observed in several areas of functioning: social relationships, communication, interests and activities, thinking and learning, movement and perception.
