How Stereotypes Affect Us

Acclaimed social psychologist Claude Steele discusses his book, “Whistling Vivaldi and Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us,” presented by Harvard Book Store. Steele shares the experiments and studies that show that just exposing subjects to stereotypes impairs their performance in the area affected by the stereotype. Steele’s conclusions shed new light on a host of U.S. social phenomena, from the racial and gender gaps in standardized test scores to ideas about athletic prowess.
